Characterization of Soils from the Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate Mine Lane Facility, Fort Belvoir, VA
Abstract
In support of mine detection sensor development programs at the U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, both onsite and laboratory measurements of soil properties were conducted on soils from the Fort Belvoir, VA, indoor mine lane facility. The lanes contain six distinctly different soils. In an effort to characterize these soils for both current and anticipated sensor technologies, measurement activities included onsite seismic refraction data collection and laboratory measurements of physical property data, complex dielectric constants, magnetic susceptibilities, visual specular reflectances, broadband infrared reflectances, and soil mineralogy and chemistry.
