Rifling Profile Push Tests: An Assessment of Bullet Engraving Forces in Various Rifling Designs

Abstract

This is the first in a series of reports aimed at assessing the influence of small caliber rifling designs on bullet engraving forces. The intent of this program is to evaluate the interior ballistics in gun barrels of unique rifling designs (e.g., polygonal) and/or bore materials (e.g., ceramic). This first report tests the assumption that engraving forces are related to the relative bore area of a small caliber gun barrel.
