Aluminum Cartridge Case Concept

Abstract

The infantryman in the field is expected to carry over 60 lbs of material. In order to reduce the weight carried by the soldier, a lightweight alternative to the brass cartridge case is an aluminum cartridge case. This comprehensive detailed report describes the design of the cartridge case, the finite element analysis, the quality functional deployment analysis, the manufacturing of over 2,500 cases using production methods, and the results of the ballistic testing of these 5.56-mm aluminum cartridge cases.
