Tactical Aviation Mission System Simulation Situational Awareness Project

Abstract

This document reports on the Department of National Defence (DND) Tactical Aviation Mission System Simulation (TAMSS) Situation Awareness (SA) project. The TAMSS SA project was conducted at the Centre for Applied Cognitive Research (CACR) at the Carleton University. In accord with the original goals of this project, the deliverables included the development of a CH146 Griffon simulation capability at the CACR, the development of a theoretical framework to guide the evaluation process, three experiments that both assessed an engineering system and a theoretical framework, and this document, which summarizes the TAMSS SA project and provides a link to acquisition programs and to potential simulation-based training applications. The TAMSS SA project provides a guide for the implementation of simulation-based evaluation on a cost-effective platform. The combination of the CSE framework and the research-enabling simulation environment that was developed in the TAMSS SA project can be used to reduce risk and enhance value in acquisition programs. Collaboration among the Carleton University CACR researchers, including graduate students, and from the visits from many DND personnel, subject matter experts, and industry representatives, has demonstrated the value of locating these activities in a research-rich environment.
