Results of Fatigue Tests of Bare AF1410 Steel Unnotched Flat Plates with Surface Corrosion Damage. Engineering Data Report

Abstract

The global maritime operating environment of U.S. Naval Aviation assets necessitates their prolonged exposure to severe corrosive environments. The resulting corrosion damage on flight critical structural components has a significant adverse impact on fleet readiness and total ownership costs. To address these issues, NAVAIR has initiated a multi-year research program to investigate and quantify the fatigue life reduction due to corrosion on high-strength steels, and to develop models and metrics to implement actionable maintenance criteria for corrosion damage. In order to develop models that can quantify the severity of corrosion damage with respect to a reduction in fatigue life, a robust set of well-characterized test results on representative test specimens is required. This report documents the results of a set of tests to quantify the fatigue life of bare AF1410 steel unnotched flat plates with various stages of laboratory-induced corrosion damage on the surface. The test data set includes a detailed characterization of the topology of surface corrosion damage on all test specimens, allowing a quantitative assessment of corrosion severity to be performed, given that an appropriate model is developed.
