Agile Port and High Speed Ship Technologies, Vol 1: FY05 Projects 3-6 and 8-10

Abstract

This report covers a multi-project program of research focused on high speed ship (HSS) and agile port (AP) technologies. The HSS program continues to develop neural networks based multidisciplinary design optimization tools critically needed for the design of high speed multi-hull vessels. The axial waterjet project conducted a self-propulsion test to define the hydrodynamic performance characteristics of the advanced-design axial-flow propulsor. The Heavy Air Lift Seabasing Ship (HALSS) study focused on design and model test results. A study was performed on tools to create a ship motion and dynamic load calculation program to predict structural loads of high-speed ships suitable for multi-hulls. The Alternate Power study sought to correlate and consolidate the various technical and economic assessments. A study was conducted to demonstrate the preliminary market, economic, and technical feasibility of a commercial short sea shipping service on the Pacific Coast. In the AP sector a study was conducted to determine the compatibility of an electric Cargo conveyor (ECCO) magnetic levitation cargo transportation system to port requirements.
