Development of the Indicator, Anti-Submarine, Training No. 1. Mk. 1

Abstract

The Anti-Submarine Training Indicator has been developed for simulating and evaluating attacks from the air against submerged submarines. It consists of an explosive sound unit attached to a float, containing the candle unit also used in the Float, Smoke and Flame 3 1/2 lb No. 1 Mk. 1. The trials described show that the sound unit is very reliable, but that the functioning of the smoke unit is impaired in seas rougher than State 2 because of water ingress. A sound unit containing 2 oz of Thunderflash composition can be heard by a submerged submarine at a range of 3000 yards whilst in moderate conditions of sea and wind, the smoke (by day) and the flame (by night) can be distinguished from the air at a range of 3 miles.
