Successive Interference Cancellation in Rake Receiver for CDMA Signals

Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to investigate various techniques of Successive Intracell Interference Cancellation (SIIC) for Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA). These techniques can improve the performance of CDMA interceptors and enhance the operation of cellular mobile communication systems. The research focuses on the forward link (downlink) where orthogonal covering is employed. We examine three interference cancellation techniques that suppress the intracell multiuser interference. The first method is called subtraction, and the second method is called projection. We also examine a third method, which is a modification of the second method, and we call it modified projection method. Although our receiver seems more complex compared to a conventional Rake receiver, it is shown to be effective in increasing the channel capacity. Independently from the above study, we also demonstrate the performance of Walsh Index Detector (WID). This detector gives us the opportunity to detect the indexes that are being used in W-CDMA signals without prior knowledge of them.
