Electron Beam Control of Combustion

Abstract

This report results from a contract tasking Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics as follows: The contractor will investigate using an electron beam to ignite and aid combustion in hydrocarbon fuel-air mixtures. The experimental portion of the project will assess the influence of electron beam pulse duration, electron energy density, gas mixture velocity (from quiesent to supersonic), gas mixture constituents, temperature, pressure, and stoichiometry. The contractor will measure the influence on reaction induction time, flame stability, and combustion efficiency. In parallel, the contract will develop a kinetic model to assess the theory behind the reactions influenced by the electron beam.
