Demonstration of Advanced Oxidation Treatment of Shipboard Blackwater and Graywater

Abstract

The demonstration project was conducted to evaluate a shipboard wastewater treatment system that could potentially meet the restrictive requirements of Department of Defense vessel design and operation and meet current and future effluent discharge standards. The laboratory portion of the project evaluated advanced oxidation technology generated via ozone and ultraviolet light. The Navalis Orion Model 5 Advanced Oxidation Wastewater Treatment System was tested with simulated shipboard wastewater. The results show that the original system design could not meet effluent quality goals when processing a combined blackwater (sewage) and graywater influent. However, with equipment modifications, the effectiveness of the system improved to meet effluent quality goals while processing blackwater influent, although at a much reduced capacity. The technology warrants further testing.
