The Center of Excellence in High Power Gas Phase Electric and Hybrid Lasers
Abstract
The Center of Excellence (COE) in High Power Gas Phase Electric and Hybrid Lasers (later changed to Center of Excellence for High Energy Lasers) was established by the High Energy Laser Division of the Directed Energy Directorate in the Air Force Research Laboratory to provide advanced educational opportunities for U. S. citizens in the area of high energy laser research and development. Using the combined efforts of the High Energy Laser Division, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Air Force Institute of Technology, the University of New Mexico (UNM), and New Mexico Tech (NMT), a program was developed to recruit, educate, and train students in various projects of high energy laser research leading to Masters and doctoral degrees. Resources in the form of this grant were provided to UNM and NMT to support the students' classroom and laboratory endeavors. Air Force laboratories at Kirtland Air Force Base were made available to the students. In all, seven students and one post-doctoral fellow participated in the program that were directly supported by this grant. Nearly 20 other students have been part of the COE. This report discusses the research conducted by the grant students while participating in the COE.
