Introduction to Open Source Research, Training Curriculum

Abstract

The curriculum provides basic instruction for performing open source research. Both an instructor and student manual included. Curriculum includes: defining open source, history and issues, in intelligence, advantages, disadvantages, Grey literature, invisible or deep web, what is the web and how large is it, whose using it, ethics, electronic search techniques, research design and methodology, information needs assessment, topic development, Boolean Logic, search features of browsers, search tools and engines, database discussion, query techniques, social media, finding people, foreign source searching, maps and imagery, source reliability and credibility, operational security (OPSEC) guidelines and recommendations. A wealth of links are provided to support each section and to assist the new researcher in knowing where to begin. The contract was in response to solicitation GS05T11 BMC0002RFP, ITSS ID 5TP571 00282.
