Early Student Support for a Process Study of Oceanic Responses to Typhoons

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to support a graduate student, Andy Hsu, pursuing the PhD degree in Physical Oceanography at the School of Oceanography. For the master research, he studies the estimate of drag coefficient under a tropical cyclone in western Pacific using direct oceanic measurements with the help of numerical model simulations for understanding the dynamics. The major findings include an abnormally large down-wind stress at intermediate wind speed and a significant cross-wind stress at high wind speed, presumably due to effects of surface waves. He successfully passed the master defense in Spring 2014 and was admitted to the PhD program. He will continue and extend the study of the estimate and parameterization of surface wind stress under extreme winds. The primary focus of his PhD study is to better quantify and understand the effects of surface waves on surface wind stress.
