Taming the Des Moines Rapids: The Background of Lock 19

Abstract

The Rock Island District of the US Army Corps of Engineers is proud of the fact that its long and distinguished history began at Keokuk, Iowa. Lieutenant Colonel James H. Wilson arrived at Keokuk in August 1866 to begin construction of the Des Moines Rapids Canal, which was the first major Corps of Engineers construction project on the Upper Mississippi River. This was the beginning of continuous improvement work on the section of the Mississippi River at Keokuk, which is the subject of this booklet.
