Flight Tests of Various Tail Modifications on the Brewster XSBA-1 Airplane. 3 - Measurements of Flying Qualities with Tail Configuration 3

Abstract

Three tail configurations of the Brewster XSBA-1 scouting bomber were flight tested. One had approximately equal movable surfaces and horn balances; another had identical surfaces but was not horn-balanced. The elevator area of the third configuration was reduced to about 25 percent of the total horizontal area, and rudder area was reduced 35 percent of the total vertical-tail area. Results of the third design of narrow-chord movable surfaces are presented and compared with previously obtained results on the other two configurations of wide-chord movable surfaces.
