Infrared Sensor Readout Design

Abstract

Conceptual design of a CCD image buffer module for the common-module FLIR has been defined. The image buffer is a solid-state replacement for the electro-optic multiplexer to be used in FLIR systems requiring remote display. This is achieved by loading and storing a field of video signals generated by the parallel-scanned detector array into an analog memory composed of CCDs, then dumping individual lines of video signal out of CRT as needed. Data and specifications for current modules have been used in conjunction with data and recent technology developments of CCDs to define the image buffer and project the improvements relative to the electro-optic multiplexer. While the image buffer module has been shown to provide benefits in performance, cost, weight, volume and power, the main benefit is in the flexibility of its solid-state configuration as compared with the mechanical complexity of the E-O unit.
