Gun Turret Smothness Tester

Abstract

Investigations to develop an instrument to measure vibration and acceleration in aircraft turrets and to assist in establishing standards of smoothness in turret drives were undertaken by the Waugh Laboratories. Study revealed that guns are subjected to low frequency vibrations. Commercial instruments were unsuitable, so Waugh Laboratories adapted early low frequency vibration experiments for use on this project. Sensitivity of instruments developed proved sufficient to pick up low frequency vibrations and to suppress other frequencies.
