Summary Technical Report of the Applied Mathematics Panel, NDRC. Volume 3. Probability and Statistical Studies in Warfare Analysis. Part 1: Bombing Studies. Part 2: Miscellaneous Studies
Abstract
Summary of principal results of probability and statistical investigations made by Applied Mathematics Panel during World War II. Investigations include statistical studies of various bombing problems, summary of principal results of probability and statistical aspects of three (torpedo) studies, three mine clearance investigations, and an extensive study of performance of heat-homing devices. Part 1: Types of bombing covered are single-release bombing, train bombing, scatter bombing, and pattern bombing. Part 2: Studies were made to determine optimum spread angles for salvos of torpedoes launched from destroyers for various ranges, target angles, number of torpedoes per salvo, comparing effectiveness of submarine-launched torpedo which would zigzag across target with straight-course torpedo, and computation of lead angles for aerial torpedo attacks against maneuvering ships.
