Adaptor for Measuring Principal Strains with Tuckerman Strain Gage

Abstract

Adaptor using three Tuckerman optical strain gages measures displacement of the three vertexes of equilateral triangle along lines 120 degrees apart relative to a given center. Average strain in direction towards first point is related to the three displacements. Gage length of adaptor equals distance between one point and the line connecting the other two points or 1.42 in. in this case. maximum error of 4% mean error 0.000001, maximum error in strain 0.00008, and direction of principal strains for unidirectional stress averaging 1 degree are given.
