Overview of IRS Plasma Wind Tunnel Facilities

Abstract

Upon entering the atmosphere of celestial bodies, spacecrafts encounter gases at velocities of more than ten km/s, thereby being subjected to great heat loads. Figure 1.1 shows artist's concept of X-3 8 reentering Earth's atmosphere 1. The X-3 8 is a technology demonstrator for the proposed Crew Return Vehicle (CRV), which will be designed for an emergency return from the International Space Station.
