Size Effects in the Measurement of Soil Strength Parameters
Abstract
The main concern of the Land Locomotion Laboratory, ATAC, is the relationship of a vehicle to the terrain over which it travels. Once an insight into this relationship has been attained, the problems encountered from the initial design of a vehicle to its ultimate use in the field can be more easily grasped and rationally solved. The solution of engineering problems depends upon the selection of the relevant variables and a description of the functional relationship among these variables. The selection of the vehicle variables are within broad limits at the disposal of the designer, but for the terrain or soil, the selection of suitable variables becomes much more complicated. Soil is probably one of the most complex of all engineering materials 1 Researchers in soil mechanics have added much to the knowledge of the mechanical and physical characteristics of soils, but as yet, no fully satisfactory general theory is available.
