Single Investigator Basic Research
Abstract
This extramural research project discovers and exploits new scientific opportunities and technology breakthroughs, primarily from universities, that will improve the Army's Transformational Capabilities. Current technologies are unable to meet the operational requirements of the future force. The Army Research Office of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) maintains a strong peer-reviewed scientific research program through which leap-ahead technological solutions may be discovered, matured, and transitioned to overcome the technological barriers associated with next generation capabilities. Included are research efforts for increasing knowledge and understanding in fields related to long-term future force needs in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry and biology), the engineering sciences (mechanical sciences, electronics, materials science and environmental science (atmospheric and terrestrial sciences), and mathematical and information sciences (mathematics, computer, and information sciences), and network science. Targeted research programs in nanotechnology, smart structures, multifunctional and microminiature sensors, intelligent systems, countermine, compact power, and other mission-driven areas will lead to a Future Force that is more strategically deployable, more agile, more lethal, and more survivable. The breadth of this basic research program covers approximately 900 active, ongoing research grants and contracts with leading academic researchers and approximately 1,600 graduate students yearly, supporting research at nearly 250 institutions in 50 states. The cited work is consistent with the Director, Defense Research and Engineering Strategic Plan, the Department of Defense Basic Research Plan, the Army Modernization Strategy, and the Army Science and Technology Master Plan. Work in this project is performed extramurally by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Adelphi, MD.
