SUICIDE PREVENTION/MITIGATION
Abstract
This project funds research over a planned five (5) year period to examine the mental and behavioral health of Soldiers to counter suicidal behavior. This work will focus on advancing understanding of the multiple determinants of suicidal behavior, psychopathology (study of the causes and nature of abnormal behavior), psychological resilience, and role functioning. A significant thrust area will focus on the development of better methods for preventing and mitigating suicidal behavior as well as to improve the overall mental health and behavioral function of Army personnel during and after their military service. The cited work is consistent with the Director, Defense Research and Engineering Strategic Plan, the Army Modernization Strategy, and the Army Science and Technology Master Plan. Work on this project is performed by The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) through extramural cooperative research grants in collaboration with the Department of the Army.
